Woking Integrated Transport Project

28th January 2017 Leave a Comment

Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council will commence essential highway improvement works to Woking Town Centre on Monday 30 January 2017. This multi-million pound highway enhancement project will, when completed, significantly improve traffic flow in the area and make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst stimulating economic growth in Woking Town Centre.

The works, which begin on Monday 30 January 2017, will see:

  • High Street and The Broadway (from Duke Street) become one-way to west-bound traffic only.
  • No left turn from Victoria Way to Church Street West from Victoria Way to Cawsey Way/High Street.
  • Create a new link road connecting High Street with Victoria Way.
  • The closure of Church Street West and Cawsey Way to all traffic (from May 2017*).
  • The relocation of the taxi rank from High Street to The Broadway.
  • Improved bus facilities along High Street and The Broadway.
  • The realignment of Chertsey Road to improve pedestrian and cycle connectivity.
  • From May 2017*, an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) will be introduced along High Street that will restrict vehicle access, parking, loading and unloading.

It is anticipated that these highway works and associated changes to the road network will take several months, with completion expected later this year. There will be times when the necessary diversion routes will have an effect on residents’ movements, such as during utilities works.

Traffic Flow Overview

Beginning at the junction between Locke Way and The Broadway on Monday 30 January 2017, the works will be phased to help minimise disruption to road users as outlined below.

The Broadway Monday 30 January – August 2017*
Church Street West Monday 30 January – March 2017*
Chertsey Road March – April 2017*
High Street and Chapel Street March – December 2017*
High Street link road complete May 2017*

Whilst these important works are carried out, it is necessary to make changes to existing bus routes and, where required, provide temporary bus stops. For more information about these changes, please visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/buses

Next steps

Residents and businesses will be affected in different ways, so it is important that you study the information below and if necessary, consider making alternative arrangements whilst the works continue.

The works are likely to cause disruption to local residents and businesses. However, both Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council are fully committed to keeping disruption to a minimum in order to deliver significant highways improvements that will benefit everyone in Woking Borough.

Essential Utilities Works

To continue to support the economic growth of Woking Town Centre, it is necessary to carry out essential utilities works, such as installing gas and water supplies, to Victoria Way. By carrying out these works now, future disruption to the highway network should be minimised.

Diversion Route 1

  • Victoria Way will be closed south-bound between Lockfield Drive and Goldsworth Road.
  • Victoria Way north-bound will remain open.
  • Church Street West will be closed between the junctions with Forge End and Victoria Way.
  • Due to the closure of Victoria Way, the spiral exit from the Shoppers Red Car Park will be suspended. Drivers are asked to use the main car park exit.
  • Diversion route with clear signage will be in place.

Diversion Route 2

  • Victoria Way (south-bound carriageway) will be reduced to one lane contra-flow only from the junction of Lockfield Drive to Victoria Arch.
  • Traffic travelling north-bound will be diverted along Goldsworth Road, Church Street West and Forge End onto Victoria Way.
  • Church Street West between the junctions of Forge End and Victoria Way will remain closed to through traffic.
  • To support the movement of traffic through the diversion, there will be no access to Goldsworth Road from the Morrison’s Roundabout.
  • Diversion route with clear signage will be in place.

Saturday 11 February to Sunday 19 February 2017

  • Victoria Way (west-bound carriageway) will close between Brook House Roundabout and the junction with Chobham Road.
  • Traffic travelling south-bound along the A320 will be diverted along the A245 at Six Crossroads Roundabout before turning left along the A3046 Chobham Road to rejoin Victoria Way.
  • Access to Double Tree Hilton Hotel and Victoria Way Car Park will be maintained at all times.
  • Diversion route with clear signage will be in place.

Welcome to the Byfleet, West Byfleet & Pyrford Residents’ Association Website

The Byfleet, West Byfleet & Pyrford Residents’ Association (the ‘RA’) is a local community group open to residents (homeowners and tenants) and businesses operating in the three villages. We attempt to represent the interests of everyone living in our area and/or contributing to the local economy. We strive to ensure that the three villages remain attractive, prosperous, environmentally sustainable, safe and socially welcoming places in which to live.

It was formed in 1928 and has been run by volunteers continuously since then – more than 90 years of dedicated service to the residents of our villages.

Current membership represents around 30% of all households (around 2,400 homes). We have a network of 150 volunteer street representatives who keep contact with our members, deliver our newsletter and collect subscriptions (where possible). These street representatives are the life blood of the RA.

The types of issues that the RA had focussed on recently include planning, Green Belt protection and anti-social behaviour. The RA also supports local charities and has a donations policy.

Looking forward the RA would like to expand its community involvement to include health, education, and leisure facilities for young people.   That is dependent on having volunteers with both an interest and a desire to become involved.

Join today and receive the next issue of our newsletter, The Resident, which is published three times a year. You will also be entitled to receive details by email of local events planned by the RA (subject to current COVID 19 restrictions) and matters of interest to local residents.
