After discussion with Byfleet resident Fiona Syrett and Cllr. John Bond, a petition, supported by the Residents’ Association, has been raised by the Footpath Officer to address safety concerns at Sopwith Drive.
A safe route to Brooklands Community Park and children’s playground is needed for residents living to the west of Sopwith Drive (A318). SCC Footpath 24 crosses Sopwith Drive and there is a narrow pedestrian refuge at the centre of the four lanes of traffic. The refuge is inadequate and unsafe when crossing with small children or for disabled users. This current crossing is particularly unsuitable for users with pushchairs, mobility scooters or wheelchairs.
The aim is to create safe pedestrian access for children and the disabled to Brooklands Community Park, the Children’s Nursery and Brooklands Retail Park, from Footpath 24 at Sopwith Drive.
The petition, and more detail including a photograph gallery can be found at:

Safe crossings in this area would benefit Surrey residents in both Woking and Elmbridge. Additionally, visitors from further afield who use Brooklands Park, the Nursery and Retail Park would also benefit. Do note that a paper petition is also circulating; kindly sign just once.

What was the conclusion of the petition? There still isn’t a safe crossing. Thanks for your help.
